Birthday Vinyl Mix
My first Substack post with a new vinyl mix featuring Prince, Janet, Tribe remixed, Emotions, and much more!
Hello! This is my first time posting and writing on the internet since Tumblr circa 2010 (what an era). I’ve decided to create stuff here as a way to encourage myself to make more things in a regular way and then to share them. The sharing makes it more high stakes and gets some skin in the GAME. I also wanted to do more than just post vinyl mixes into the void of Mixcloud and engage in something more dynamic- like sharing my writing and other types of music ideas (song writing, sound collaging, sampling, etc.) with others. And with that, this will also be my digital archive of sorts and allow me to witness my own progress, which is important as a self-conscious and self-defeating creative such as myself.
I also like that there’s options to upload all types of mixed media like photos, videos, audio of any kind. I hope to upload conversations and collaborations with my very musically talented friends too (Lia and Tommy looking at y’all).
Maybe Substack will burn to the ground at some point like a little bird once did, and all of my work will be gone from here. But if we don’t create and then detach we will self annihilate anyway!
So please enjoy this lil vinyl mix I made on my 38th birthday. I’ll get into my experience with vinyl mixing in a future post, because there’s both benefits and drawbacks to it. I also feel like there can be a lot of DJ snobbery out there around who’s “rEaL” and who’s just twisting knobs. We are all just twisting knobs. Yes, there’s some more tactile effort that goes into vinyl mixing but it also creates a lot of limitations. I like working with the limitations, personally, it’s how I learn best. I like analog. It also means that some of my transitions just SUCK. You’ll hear some of that in this mix. You’ll also hear some transitions that I think are pretty good.
I’ve uploaded the audio here in two different listening formats. The first is embedded directly into Substack, which means it wasn’t mastered. I haven’t listened to it all the way through because I’m lazy. The audio might be weird. I’ll listen eventually and upload thoughts on mastering a mix (I am NEW and very GREEN but technology is cool) and uploading directly to Substack. The second is a link to my Mixcloud which will likely have better audio quality and has been mastered by me in Ableton. It also might be weird or worse because again I’m NEW to mastering. Feel free to follow me on Mixcloud because that’s where the rEaL DjS ArE!
